Plants that are not Poisonous—Non-poisonous Houseplants

By

Concerns over toxic houseplants are common, and it's true that some of the plants we grow inside can cause medical issues ranging from allergic reactions to toxic poisoning.

Plant allergies are technically not considered cases of plant poisoning. Allergic reactions only affect people with sensitivity to that plant. The following plants are considered non-toxic, althought they will affect people with allergies to that particular plant:

  • African violets
  • Bird of paradise
  • Bird's news fern
  • Boston fern
  • Cast iron plant
  • Coleus
  • Dracaena (species)
  • Echeveria
  • Ficus
  • Jade plant
  • Kalanchoe
  • Lipstick plant
  • Maidenhair fern
  • Orchids
  • Poinsettia (although sap may be an irritant)
  • Spider plant
  • Wax plant
  • Zebra plant
